Why Should You be Interested in What We Do?
Anyone running a businesses making stuff, maintaining, repairing, or maybe recycling materials probably creates a bit of noise in the process. Health and Safety Law requires employers to assess (along with general workplace hazards) the noise exposure of employees; and where that noise exposure is significant, to implement suitable control measures. It’s your legal duty to do that, in black and white; and one that you should take seriously since occupational deafness can be debilitating for the individual, and potentially very expensive indeed for you.
In theory, noise and vibration risk assessment is a fairly straightforward business, and the HSE would very much like all of you to crack on and carry out those assessments using the guidance on their website. In theory, you don’t need us.
But, it’s not quite as simple as that…
You may not have the time, inclination or confidence to deal with health and safety issues, including noise and vibration. That’s why many businesses bring in outside H&S practitioners to ‘do’ their H&S for them.
Noise and vibration is a tad technical, and involves some maths as well as an understanding of risk assessments and the hierarchy of control measures. This is bread and butter to us, but possibly baffling for you.
Even if you wish to have a go yourselves, you can’t necessarily get the information required to carry out the workplace noise assessments, eg what are the noise levels around a given process? If you buy a new piece of machinery, the supplier has to give that information, but if your machinery is old, or has been modified, how do you know?
Often, the best, and cheapest way of determining how loud something is, and the typical daily exposure of your people, is to measure the sound accurately, in accordance with internationally recognized methods.
